Communication Matters to Teaching.
The quality of your instruction is defined as much by how you communicate as it is by what you teach. Effective teaching relies heavily on a teacher’s ability to effectively communicate their instruction so that students clearly understand the lesson, display appropriate behaviors, and are actively engaged and eager to learn.
Here is a list of the best communication skills every teacher should develop.
1: Clear & Simple Explanation.
Students learn more effectively when lessons are simple to understand. Long explanations often confuse students and result in decreased interest in the lesson. Make your lesson easy for students to learn and understand by communicating the information in short sentences and simple words.
2: Active Listening.
While a teacher’s primary role may be providing lessons, communication is a two-way process and teachers should take time to effectively listen to their students. Be sure to practice and use active listening skills to fully understand your students’ learning gaps, questions and concerns.
3: Be Mindful of Nonverbal Communication.
While we may focus on what we are saying, it is also important to focus on how we are saying it. Your tone of voice, body language, facial expressions, etc., will send a subtle message and should be mindful of. Use effective eye contact, open and positive body language, and a strong and confident voice tone.
4: Adaptable Communication.
There is no one right way of communicating to your students, and students differ from each other on how best they process information. A successful teacher must be adaptable and able to adjust the way information is communicated based on age, academic level, and individual learning abilities of their students. Adapting your message will increase student comprehension and decrease frustration when working with others in the classroom.
5: Questions.
Asking questions is an effective tool that can help promote participation and higher level thinking. Utilize open-ended questions as a means to elicit student thought and response and avoid yes/no question.
6: Give Constructive Feedback.
Providing feedback is an essential part of the learning process, and feedback must be constructive in nature. Provide specific feedback and guidance so that students are empowered to improve their performance. Effective feedback will instill the feeling of confidence and promote growth.
Communication Skills. Effective communication skills are essential to all teachers. The ability to effectively communicate can help promote student understanding, strengthen a teacher’s relationship with students, and create a more positive learning environment. By effectively working on your communication skills on a daily basis, you can help promote successful learning opportunities for your students!
